Grade 7 Year Review

Grade 7 Year Review

Grade seven was a tough year. Mostly with having to readjust to online school every other week. Also with balancing the amounts of stress that I would get. Some advice I would give to people going into Grade 7 next year would be to not procrastinate. Whenever I would procrastinate I would face the consequences not long later, whether it being me having to finish a project last minute, or being overloaded with stress because of how much work I have. I recommend writing your homework down, usually, it seems like you have a lot to do but in reality, it’s not a lot. Some goals that I have for next year are, to manage my stress better, to be prepared for everything in advance, and to try harder in classes.

My “Covidcation”

My “Covidcation”

Meirav’s “Covidcation”

This year my winter break was different than usual. Since COVID cases in Canada went up rapidly, my family and I were not able to go to Florida. At first when I heard this news I was sad, because I like to go to Florida to keep warm in the cold winters in Canada. Although, I later realized that I could have fun whether I’m in the cold in Ottawa or the warmth in Florida.

On the first day of my Covidcation I woke up around 11:00 AM. I lay in my bed on my phone scrolling through Instagram, liking every other post. I looked at the time and it read 11:30.

“Meirav!” Abba yelled, “time for breakfast!” I rushed downstairs into the kitchen and I saw a bowl of fruit for me to eat. It was my job to decide what to have with the fruit. I whipped out my cookbook and flipped to the first recipe titled Buttermilk Pancakes. I started making the pancakes. I mixed all of the ingredients together to make a nice thick and beige batter. When the pancakes are ready I eat them. They tasted as good as my Abba’s.

I headed back upstairs to my room to get dressed for the day. After I changed into my usual jeans and a sweatshirt I crossed the hallway to my Ima’s room to get her phone and play Roblox with my friends.

I repeated this routine for the whole week, right up until Friday.

I started Friday in the same way; I check my phone, eat pancakes and fruit, get dressed, and play on my Ima’s device. Then in the afternoon I hear my name being called to go downstairs.

I descended the stairs to the livingroom to see an escape room set up on the dining table. What fun!

After having finished the escape room, one hour later, I went off to make fudge brownies. I retrieved all of the ingredients, and stirred them together to make a nice and thick brown batter. I placed the batter into a hot oven and then I waited. Then I waited some more. I waited for a million years!

Fast forward to New Year’s Eve. At around 5:00, my Ima and I began watching a movie about teens in the American School of Ballet. All of a sudden my Ima remembered that we signed up for an online drag queen show for New Year’s Eve! With haste we logged onto a zoom call for a “meet and greet” with two queens named Miz Cracker and Peppermint.

A half hour later he logged onto a live stream that Miz Cracker and Peppermint were hosting! Several other queens participated in that live stream. Their costumes and makeup were out of this word! My sister, Liat, and I decided to stay up until 3:00 AM to see two of our favourite drag queens, Katya Petrovna Zamolodchicova, often referred to as Katya, and Trixie Mattel. That night Liat and I decided to make a fan account on Instagram for Trixie Mattel and Katya. Can you believe it that now, on January 6, it already has 232 followers?

On the last weekend of my “Covidcation”, Maytal joined me for a sleepover. We watched Ratatouille The Musical. It was surprisingly short, but I was still gratefull to get tickets! After the musical, Maytal and I ventured off to the basement. We watched TV, we conversed with friends, we played Roblox, and lastly we started a Tik Tok account together. Sunday ended my “Covidcation” on a more mundane note; I had to clean the whole house!

So, then here we are! Back at school, and online. I think I need to fix my digital blues… I need another Covidcation!

What its like in a regular day at OJCS

What its like in a regular day at OJCS

As I put my shoes on to go to school, my Ima yells at me, “Meirav! Do you have your mask?” “Yes Ima!” I answer back at her. I grab my mask and head out the door to my car. When I arrive at my school, the Ottawa Jewish Community School (OJCS), I stretch the tight elastics around my ears and around my mouth feeling my breath bounce back onto my skin. As I walk into school, I hear the teachers say; “Don’t forget to put on hand sanitizer!”. I brush my hand under the automatic dispenser and feel the gooey sensation of the hand sanitizer. As I rush up the stairs to get to my homeroom teacher’s class, I say hello to familiar people. When I get to my class, I walk all the way across the room to my desk beside the always open window. I set my bags down beside my desk, relieved to have all the weight off of my back. I sit down in the dark green chair, the chair hard against my back, and take my half-charged computer out of my backpack. My computer is hard and heavy in my hands. I set it down on my desk and wait for people to come into the classroom so I have people to talk to. As the teacher walks into the classroom, I face the whiteboard that has something about natural disasters written on it from the core French social studies class. “BRING BRING” the bell rings to start the day. “Hello everyone!” our teacher greets the class. The 40 minute period goes by, and the bell rings again, signaling we have math class. We pack up our computers as our math teacher walks in. I take out my bright pink math notebook and a dark blue pencil with the eraser a quarter way used.

40 more minutes go by, and the bell rings again! We put our math stuff away as our gym teacher walks up the stairs. I sigh, I remember it’s my turn to take the mesh bag full of footballs, soccer balls, and basketballs. I grab the rope handle and swing the heavy bag around my back. We walked down the stairs, my hand cemented against the brown wooden railing. When I am back at the hallway I started the day, we form a line. When I finally get outside the cold air chills against my skin. I can hear the sound of kids younger than me screaming and playing. 40 more minutes later, we go and have a snack. We walk to the benches at the front of the school, the heavy ball bag slung over my shoulder. I sit down on the wet and cold picnic bench. I talk to the person across from me, the table pressed against my stomach as I lean forward. When the first nutrition break is over I go inside and put more gooey hand sanitizer on my hands making them cold. I go back upstairs and walk past the long line of dark grey lockers, following the arrows on the ground and walk back into my homeroom. The core French teacher is in the class setting up, “Bonjour!’ she says. “Bonjour!” I say back. I grab my vibrant red French book and hard black binder.  I head down two long flights of stairs, my legs hurting after. I walk through the long hallways on my way to french class, panting in my mask, the hot air blowing against my skin. Usually, I smell the nice aroma of people making hot lunch, although because of COVID-19, I am not able to. A couple more periods go by, and we are let out of school. “Goodbye!” I say to all of my friends and teachers. I walk out the doors of the school, and pull off my mask, my ears in pain. Finally, I get to take off my mask and go home. The end of a typical day at school during COVID-19.

My New Website!

My New Website!

I made a website about Anne Frank. Click here to see the website! For English class, we had to read a book and make something about it, for example, you could make a children’s book, a board game, a podcast. I chose to make a webpage. I chose to do this because I want to expand my skills with technology and different websites. Although I would’ve spent more time on it. Over time I might add more stuff to the website. Stay tuned!

The Girls ice cream

The Girls ice cream

When I went to Florida I went to an ice cream place called The Girls. I got superman ice cream. When the server gave me the ice cream I walked out to the back and I sat down at one of the grey tables. I licked the colourful ice cream and I tasted a very sweet flavour, and I felt it rush down my throat. When I eat my ice cream I hear the loud chirps of the birds in the cages behind the fence behind me. When my family is done eating their ice cream we walk down the path to the booth to buy tickets to see the birds. “Can we get food for the birds?” I ask as we get there. “No” my ima answers. My ima hands the person working at the booth 5 green bills. “Yay!” I say when we get the tickets. I take the purple bracelet that the person working the booth hands me and my ima helps me put the bracelet on. With my sister I run to a colourful toucan and say: “Hi there little toucan!” I run from bird to bird to bird until I stop at this one white bird. “Hi!” my sister says. After my sister Liat said that I said: “Hi there little birdie!” Immediately after that the feathers on the birds heat shot up! “Wow Liat! Look!” I say. Then the feathers slowly went down. I look at more and more birds when I stop at a little pen that you can go into and pet two goats and five rabbits! “Can I go in Ima? Please, Please?” me and Liat ask my Ima. “Yes.” my Ima answers. I ran into the pen and run to a tiny brown goat. I stars petting the life out of that goat and it starts to lick my shoe. When it stops licking my shoe I walk to a small white goat. I follow it to a small white wood and metal cage and it starts to lick it. “Baaaaaaaa” the goat says. “Aww so cute!” I say back. I walk to the five bunnies and pet their white and black fluffy bodies. “Girls! Come back now!” my ima says. As I walk out of the little pen I say to my ima jokingly “can we please get a baby goat?” “No!” my abba jokes back. I am very sad as we walk out the brown exit. Overall I suggest going to The Girls ice cream in Delray Beach.
